Podlaskie's Specialization
The medical sector is one of the leading specialisations of Podlaskie. Regional companies manufacture high quality medical implants, conduct research on anti-cancer drugs, while local universities, led by the Medical University of Białystok and the Białystok University of Technology provide highly specialised personnel.
Years of experience, artificial intelligence, and machine learning
Newest technologies, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, also find their application in medicine. The Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, established in Podlaskie, is one of the few institutions in the world creating unique data sets in the area of cancer and civilisation diseases. Algorithms developed on the basis of collected data allow forming optimal diagnosis and proposing the right form of therapy for individual patients.
Podlaskie houses leaders in the field of medical implants who use innovative solutions on a global scale. These include ChM - the largest Polish manufacturer of implants and instruments used in traumatology and orthopaedics.
Medgal operates in a similar area of business, its speciality being the design, manufacture and sale of implants and equipment used in bone surgery and orthopaedics.
The companies are constantly implementing innovations that allow them to maintain a strong position in international markets.Mindhand – a bionic hand prosthesis – was developed for people with disabilities, especially to meet the needs of people who have lost an upper limb.
The prosthesis constructed by Mindhand sp. z o. o. is expected to be much cheaper than devices currently available on the market and therefore affordable for most people in need.
A number of projects carried out by researchers at regional universities, such as the Bialystok University of Technology and the Medical University, may soon result in the implementation of new forms of therapy and medicine.
Examples of such projects include research into the biological activity of tree fungi in the Białowieża Forest, which has resulted in a patent application describing the anticancer effects of Heterobasidion annosum, a fungus that can inhibit the growth of cancerous cells and support the treatment of colorectal cancer in particular.
