EXPO world fairs are among the grandest and most prestigious events in on the planet, combining economic, promotional, cultural and tourist themes. Taking place every 5 years, they can be compared in scale to the Olympic Games or the World Cup. Since the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, the EXPO World Fair become the world capital for six months, attracting throngs of visitors - ranging from top level national delegations, thorough representatives of business in search for new contracts, to tourists and families with children.
EXPO has featured the first presentations of many inventions (the telephone, the X-ray machine, commercial television, the mobile phone, and hamburgers) and modern architectural symbols (the Vasco da Gama bridge in Lisbon, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Statue of Liberty in New York or the Atomium in Brussels). Today, the Expo is a unique platform for international dialogue about progress and cooperation.
EXPO 2020 in Dubai will take place between 1 October 2021 and 30 March 2022, and will be the first World Exhibition staged in an Arab country. Its organisers claim that it aspires to become the largest show in history. The theme of the exhibition is: Connecting Minds, Creating the Future, highlighting that today’s global challenges are so complex and intricate that they cannot be solved in isolation. The theme encourages cooperation - regardless of geographical distance, institutional barriers and cultural differences.
EXPO 2020 in Dubai is intended to be an inclusive exhibition. Its organizers strived to invite as many countries as possible and to attract the largest number of foreign visitors in the history of EXPO (70% of all visitors).
